It helped me a lot and got me from 1300 to 1500I would say to just go right away, so that you can get started on improving, but if your rating is very low then it might be a good idea to wait a little bit, but not too long.Overall I'd probably say to just go, because even if you lose your first few games you'll learn more and meet people who can help you.And as far as 5/10 min games, I'd suggest to get off those immediately. If you still don't know what plan you should have followed in a certain position you should look at games of GMs and look at what plan they followed.Also if you have the time read the Amateur's mind by IM Jeremy Silman. Positions in which you think you could've played better (ex: You played a move and suddenly you felt like you lost the initiative and the opponent took control)After analyzing your game this way turn on the engine and look for opportunities where you missed a tactic or two! This is where the engine will help you.The thing about computers is that they play very computer like moves with plans which human players cannot understand! Their moves are based on pure calculation and they Fail to find the plan in closed positions.If you do this after every game, you will find the glaring flaws in your game and your way of thinking about a position. I'm fairly new to competitive Chess (only started playing at clubs a month ago, and now I'm starting to take it serious despite knowing how the pieces move my whole life) but I'd recommend just going. What I'd recommend is playing the daily games on Chess.com (maybe like a few at a time) where you have 24 hours to make a move, because then you can take like 5 mins to try to find the best move. Blitz is just bad for beginners because you won't learn, or critically think.

Just stick with it for a bit, and you'll really enjoy it. 30 min rapid is better than 5/10 min, but I'd still recommend both.And yeah there definitely isn't anything to lose. I'd still suggest to play the daily games on Chess.com, and setting up the position on an actual board, then take a few minutes to find a good move. But anyways, when I went to one of my local clubs, I lost pretty badly to some strong players, and almost didn't want to come back, but once the tournament director realized my rating was probably lower, he put me against people who were closer to my skill level. Right now, I'm rated an 799 after just one tournament, which isn't bad for someone who's completely new to competitive Chess, but OTB (over the board) ratings take a while to become accurate, because it's such a small sample size.
